The Sims 2 is a 2004 life simulation game from Maxis and Electronic Arts that expands the series with generational play, genetics, aging, aspirations, and more expressive Sims.

The Sims 2 moves the everyday-life sandbox of The Sims into a fuller 3D world where households can grow across an entire lifetime. Players create Sims, build homes, manage needs, guide careers and relationships, and watch choices ripple through families as children inherit traits from their parents and older Sims pass through distinct life stages.

The sequel keeps the series focused on open-ended domestic storytelling, but it gives those stories sharper systems. Aspirations and fears turn routine decisions into character goals, wants encourage short-term direction, and memories let major events become part of a Sim's personal history. The result is still a toy box, but one with more consequence and personality than the original game.

Its move to fully 3D presentation also changed how the series felt to play. Rotating cameras, closer animation, more detailed objects, and readable facial expressions made households easier to inhabit, while the build and buy tools preserved the approachable house-design loop that had become central to the franchise.

The Sims 2 was one of 2004's defining PC releases, earning strong reviews and becoming a long-lived platform for expansion packs, custom content, and player-made stories. Its generational structure and character-driven simulation remain key reasons it is often singled out as one of the strongest entries in the series.

On goty.world it appears through GQ's 2023 list of the 100 greatest video games and through a D.I.C.E. Awards nomination for Outstanding Innovation in Computer Gaming, reflecting both its broad cultural footprint and its specific design leap for life simulation.
