Space Invaders

Space Invaders is Taito's 1978 arcade fixed shooter, a genre-defining coin-op about holding back descending alien waves with a lone laser cannon.

Designed by Tomohiro Nishikado, Space Invaders turned a simple screen layout into one of the foundational arcade games. The player moves a laser base along the bottom of the screen, firing upward at five descending rows of aliens while hiding behind destructible bunkers. A mystery ship crosses the top for bonus points, enemy fire chips away at cover, and each cleared wave gives way to another formation that starts lower on the screen.

Its most famous design twist came from a hardware limitation. As the player destroyed aliens, the processor had fewer objects to draw, so the remaining invaders moved faster. Nishikado kept the acceleration, and the game gained a rising tempo that made every successful shot increase the pressure. That feedback loop, paired with the cabinet’s steady sound effects and high-score display, helped define the emotional grammar of arcade play: survive, improve, and put one more coin in.

The original 1978 cabinets used black-and-white graphics with colored cellophane overlays and mirrored display effects, making the stark alien grid feel larger than the hardware itself. Taito released the game in Japan, while Midway handled the North American release later that year. Its popularity was immediate and enormous, turning dedicated arcades into mainstream destinations and proving that a video game could become a mass cultural event.

Space Invaders established the fixed-shooter template that later games such as Galaxian and Galaga would elaborate. Its descending enemies, defensive barriers, score chase, and escalating difficulty became common design vocabulary, while the pixel alien became one of video games’ most recognizable symbols. TIME ranked it among the 50 greatest video games of all time, recognizing not just its influence but the clarity of a design that still reads instantly almost half a century later.
