Pitfall! is Activision's 1982 Atari 2600 jungle platform game, sending Pitfall Harry across hazards, treasures, and timed screens in one of the console's defining adventures.

Pitfall! turns the Atari 2600 into a compact expedition. Designed by David Crane and published by Activision, it follows Pitfall Harry through a chain of jungle screens filled with logs, tar pits, crocodiles, snakes, scorpions, ladders, tunnels, and swinging vines. The goal is simple to understand and hard to master: collect as much treasure as possible before the twenty-minute timer expires while preserving Harry's limited lives.

The game is remembered for making movement itself feel like an adventure. Each screen is a small obstacle course, and the world loops together in a way that encourages route planning rather than isolated score chasing. Players can run above ground, take underground shortcuts, and learn the timing of rolling logs and crocodile jaws, with every mistake carrying a score penalty or the risk of losing a life.

Its visual language is spare but unusually readable for the hardware. Harry's running animation, the bold green jungle, and the clean hazard shapes give the game a stronger sense of place than many early console releases. The famous vine swing works as both a mechanical challenge and a character moment, selling the fantasy of a pulp adventure with only a few pixels and a sharp sound effect.

Pitfall! became one of Activision's signature hits and one of the Atari 2600's best-known original games. Its side-view exploration, timed treasure hunt, and obstacle-based screen design helped define an early vocabulary for console platform games, making it a regular fixture on lists of historically important video games.
