Mother 3 is a Game Boy Advance role-playing game about a family, a village, and the strange forces that transform the Nowhere Islands.
Mother 3 is a role-playing game developed by Brownie Brown and HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo for the Game Boy Advance. Released in Japan in 2006, it is the third main entry in the Mother series and follows Lucas, his family, and the residents of Tazmily Village as their quiet home is changed by the Pigmask Army.
The game uses a top-down structure with towns, forests, caves, and other areas connected by story chapters. Characters talk with villagers, find items, solve small environmental problems, and enter turn-based battles against enemies shaped by the series' offbeat humor and melancholy.
Combat keeps the series' rolling HP meter, where damage counts down over time and can be interrupted by quick healing or a fast victory. Mother 3 also adds rhythm-timed attack combos, asking players to tap along with the battle music to extend physical attacks.
The pixel art is bright and compact, but the story often pushes against the warmth of its towns and characters. Its soundtrack, written by Shogo Sakai, supports both the timing-based battle system and the game's shifts between comedy, grief, and surreal adventure.
Although it remained a Japan-only Game Boy Advance release, Mother 3 became one of the platform's most discussed role-playing games among international players. Its placement on Popular Mechanics' 2019 list of the 100 greatest video games reflects the long afterlife of its story, music, and fan reputation.
