Mega Man 2 is Capcom's 1988 NES action-platformer that refined the Robot Master stage-select formula and helped define the classic Mega Man series.
Mega Man 2 sends the blue-armored robot hero against eight new Robot Masters created by Dr. Wily after his first defeat. Players can tackle the stages in any order, learning each boss's weakness, collecting their weapons, and gradually building a toolkit for the late-game fortress gauntlet.
The sequel sharpened the structure introduced by Mega Man. It expanded the boss roster from six to eight, made stage themes more memorable, and balanced precise platforming with projectile combat that rewards both route knowledge and improvisation. Items earned from Dr. Light also add traversal options that make the order of completion feel meaningful.
Its NES presentation became part of the series' identity: bright character silhouettes, immediately readable hazards, and a soundtrack full of compact, driving melodies. Stages such as Metal Man, Air Man, Quick Man, and Bubble Man helped turn the Robot Master format into a repeatable Capcom signature.
Mega Man 2 was a major step up in reputation and reach from the original game, especially after its 1989 North American release. It remains one of the most commonly cited NES action games, appearing on multiple all-time lists and serving as the reference point for many later Mega Man sequels and retro-inspired platformers.
