Mass Effect is a 2007 action role-playing shooter developed by BioWare, casting players as Commander Shepard on a galaxy-spanning mission to stop the Reaper threat — a landmark in narrative RPG design that launched one of gaming's most acclaimed trilogies.

Overview

Mass Effect is set in the 22nd century, in a universe where humanity has joined a vast galactic community after discovering the ruins of an advanced alien civilisation. Players take on the role of Commander Shepard — fully customisable in appearance, gender, and backstory — tasked by the human military council to stop a rogue Spectre named Saren Arterius, who is working alongside a synthetic race of machines called the Geth. Behind Saren lies a far greater threat: the Reapers, ancient machine intelligences who periodically harvest all organic life in the galaxy.

Gameplay

The game blends third-person cover-based shooting with deep RPG mechanics: character classes, skill trees, weapon upgrades, and a rich dialogue system built around a Paragon/Renegade morality axis. Shepard's squad of two companions accompany every mission, each with their own backstory, combat abilities, and optional loyalty quests. Conversations are handled through a radial dialogue wheel — a BioWare signature that allows players to steer tone and outcome while keeping interactions fluid. The Normandy serves as Shepard's ship and home base, where crew relationships develop between missions. Exploration of the Milky Way is handled through the galaxy map, with dozens of side planets accessible via the Mako, a six-wheeled all-terrain vehicle.

Worldbuilding and Story

BioWare constructed an unusually deep science fiction setting — the Codex, accessible at any point, details the history, biology, and politics of every alien species and location in the game. The Asari, Turians, Salarians, Quarians, and Krogans each have distinct cultures shaped by their evolutionary histories, and their relationships with humanity form the game's political backdrop. The central mystery — what the Reapers are, why they come, and whether they can be stopped — carries genuine weight.

Reception

Mass Effect received widespread critical acclaim on release, praised for its storytelling ambition, voice acting, and the sense of scale it conveyed across its galaxy. It won several game of the year awards for 2007 and established BioWare as one of the premier studios for narrative-driven RPGs. Its decisions carry forward into Mass Effect 2 and 3, making it the foundation of one of gaming's most celebrated trilogies.
