Heroes of Might and Magic III is New World Computing's 1999 fantasy strategy game, combining kingdom management, hero progression, exploration, resource gathering, town building, and turn-based tactical battles.
Heroes of Might and Magic III casts players as commanders in a fantasy war across Erathia, where heroes lead armies, capture towns, collect resources, and uncover a map filled with mines, artifacts, monsters, and hidden rewards. Its campaign structure follows the Restoration of Erathia story, while standalone scenarios and multiplayer maps turn the same systems into long strategic contests.
The game alternates between an adventure map and hex-based battles. On the map, heroes spend movement points each day to scout, claim territory, recruit creatures, and develop skills. In combat, stacks of units fight across a grid, with speed, morale, ranged attacks, spell schools, terrain, and creature abilities shaping each encounter.
Town development gives the strategy layer much of its identity. Each faction has its own buildings, creature lineups, magic guild, economy, and visual style, from Castle and Rampart to Necropolis, Dungeon, Inferno, Tower, Stronghold, Fortress, and Conflux in later releases. Choosing when to build income, upgrade units, or push with an army creates the game's familiar one-more-turn rhythm.
Released for PC in 1999 and expanded through Armageddon's Blade, The Shadow of Death, and Complete editions, Heroes of Might and Magic III became the defining entry in the series. Its readable art, dense maps, hot-seat multiplayer, scenario editor, and durable tactical systems have kept it active through re-releases, community maps, and long-running strategy-game retrospectives.
