Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice is an action-adventure game developed and self-published by Ninja Theory. Released in 2017 for PlayStation 4 and PC, it follows Senua as she enters a Norse underworld to fight for the soul of her dead lover, with the story framed through trauma, grief, and psychosis.
The game is built as a focused third-person journey through exploration, environmental puzzles, and melee combat. Senua reads symbols and patterns in the world to open paths, listens to voices that react to threats and uncertainty, and fights small groups of enemies with dodges, blocks, parries, and sword strikes.
Rather than using a broad role-playing structure or open world, Hellblade keeps the player close to Senua's perspective. Its progression is linear and cinematic, with puzzles and combat encounters serving the psychological pressure of the journey as much as traditional challenge.
Ninja Theory developed the game with input from neuroscientists and people with lived experience of psychosis. Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice became one of 2017's most awarded independent releases. It won multiple British Academy Games Awards, including Artistic Achievement, Audio Achievement, British Game, and Game Beyond Entertainment, and also won Best Audio Design, Best Performance, and Games for Impact at The Game Awards 2017.
