Half-Life 4

Half-Life is Valve's 1998 first-person shooter set inside the Black Mesa Research Facility. It keeps the player inside Gordon Freeman's point of view from the opening tram ride onward, combining scripted events, combat, environmental puzzles, and uninterrupted level flow into one of the defining PC games of the late 1990s.

Half-Life was developed by Valve and released for Windows in November 1998. Instead of building its campaign as a sequence of disconnected missions, it follows theoretical physicist Gordon Freeman through a continuous disaster at Black Mesa, from a failed experiment to a military cover-up and an alien incursion. The game rarely cuts away from the player's perspective, using scientists, guards, radio chatter, laboratories, and combat encounters to carry the story in real time.

Gameplay

The campaign is a first-person shooter with a strong emphasis on pacing and environmental problem solving. Gordon fights alien creatures, automated defenses, and Hazardous Environment Combat Unit soldiers while moving through labs, offices, blast pits, rail tunnels, launch facilities, and border-world spaces. Weapons range from familiar pistols, shotguns, and explosives to experimental energy tools and alien bio-weapons, with many encounters asking the player to read the space rather than simply clear a room.

Design

Half-Life's major shift was presentation. Its levels use scripted events, reactive non-player characters, and visible cause-and-effect moments to make Black Mesa feel like a place collapsing around the player. The opening tram, the resonance cascade, soldiers breaching rooms, scientists arguing, and creatures moving through vents all became part of the game's language: story as authored action inside the level, not as a separate cinematic layer.

Reception

Half-Life became one of the benchmark PC shooters of its era, winning multiple Game of the Year awards and helping establish Valve as a major studio. Its influence carried into mods, multiplayer communities, Counter-Strike, and the later Half-Life sequels. The game is listed at #52 on GQ's 2023 ranking and #31 on IGN's 2021 top 100, and it received D.I.C.E. nominations for art/graphics, story development, interactive design, and software engineering.
