Gauntlet is Atari Games' 1985 arcade dungeon crawler, a four-player action game built around fantasy classes, shared survival, and maze rooms full of monsters.

Designed by Ed Logg and released by Atari Games in 1985, Gauntlet brought fantasy role-playing ideas into the arcade as a fast, top-down hack-and-slash game. Up to four players could join at once as Thor the Warrior, Merlin the Wizard, Thyra the Valkyrie, or Questor the Elf, each with different strengths in combat, magic, armor, and speed.

Its dungeons are dense with locked doors, food, treasure, potions, monster generators, and exits that keep the party moving. Health drains steadily over time, so the game turns cooperation into pressure: players need to share resources, clear spawn points, and decide whether to linger for treasure or push toward the next level.

Gauntlet became one of the defining multiplayer arcade games of the mid-1980s. Its character callouts, crowded maze screens, and drop-in party structure helped shape later action RPGs and dungeon crawlers, while its four-player cabinet made the social chaos of the arcade part of the design.
