Divinity: Original Sin 2 is a turn-based RPG developed by Larian Studios set in the world of Rivellon, where players build a party of Source-wielding Sourcerors and navigate a richly reactive world of political intrigue, moral ambiguity, and tactical combat. It supports up to four-player cooperative play.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 is a role-playing game developed and published by Larian Studios, released in September 2017 following a successful Kickstarter campaign. Set in the fantasy world of Rivellon, the game places players in the role of a Sourceror — someone capable of wielding the forbidden magic known as Source — who has been captured and exiled to an island prison. From there, a vast story unfolds involving gods, power, and the question of who should control the divine order itself.

Gameplay and Systems

Combat in Divinity: Original Sin 2 is turn-based and deeply systemic. Elemental surfaces interact: fire ignites oil slicks, water conducts electricity, blood can be frozen into ice. Positioning and initiative matter enormously, and encounters reward creative thinking over brute force. The game offers four origin characters — each with a fully written backstory, personal quest, and unique dialogue — as well as a custom character option. Playing as an origin character in another player's game means NPCs recognise and react to you differently.

Outside combat, the game is a sprawling RPG sandbox. Conversations branch extensively, skill checks open alternate solutions, and many quests have multiple resolutions with meaningful consequences. Players can pickpocket, persuade, sneak, or fight their way through almost any obstacle. The world reacts to race and class: playing as an Undead character, for instance, means disguising your skeleton face from NPCs who would otherwise attack on sight.

Cooperative Play

Up to four players can share the campaign, each controlling one character. Unlike many co-op RPGs, Divinity: Original Sin 2 allows players to disagree during dialogues and to make independent decisions — including working against each other if the story demands it. The GM Mode lets one player take on a dungeon master role, narrating custom adventures for the others using the game's full toolset.

Reception

Released to exceptional reviews — a 93 on PC Metacritic — Divinity: Original Sin 2 is widely regarded as one of the finest RPGs ever made and a landmark in the genre's return to complex, systems-driven design. Its success directly enabled Larian Studios to take on Baldur's Gate 3, which it then released to even greater acclaim in 2023.
