Day of the Tentacle, also known as Maniac Mansion: Day of the Tentacle, is a point-and-click adventure game developed and published by LucasArts in 1993. Directed by Dave Grossman and Tim Schafer, it follows Bernard Bernoulli, Hoagie, and Laverne as they try to stop Purple Tentacle from mutating into a world-conquering genius. The premise is absurd by design, but the structure is unusually elegant: a botched time-machine trip strands the three characters in the same mansion during the past, present, and future.
The game uses LucasArts’ SCUMM interface, where players choose verbs, inspect rooms, collect objects, and solve puzzles through observation and comic logic. Its time-travel setup gives ordinary inventory puzzles a larger shape. An action in colonial-era America can change the mansion’s future, while items can be flushed between eras through the Chron-o-Johns. That structure lets the game build multi-step puzzles without losing the approachable rhythm of a cartoon comedy.
Its presentation is one of the clearest expressions of LucasArts’ early 1990s adventure style. The exaggerated character designs, squash-and-stretch animation, bright backgrounds, and rapid joke delivery borrow heavily from classic animation while remaining readable as a computer game. The CD-ROM version added full voice acting, helping the cast feel closer to an animated feature than a text-heavy puzzle game.
