Cuphead is Studio MDHR’s 2017 run-and-gun action game, pairing hand-drawn 1930s cartoon animation with demanding boss fights, jazz scoring, and tight arcade shooting.

Cuphead follows Cuphead and Mugman after a reckless visit to the Devil’s casino leaves them owing their souls. To escape the deal, they travel across the Inkwell Isles collecting soul contracts from a roster of strange debtors, most of whom become elaborate multi-phase boss encounters. The structure is direct and theatrical: a world map, short run-and-gun stages, mausoleum challenges, and boss fights that behave like animated set pieces.

The game’s reputation rests on how closely its presentation and mechanics work together. Every enemy is drawn with rubber-hose exaggeration, every attack is telegraphed through animation, and every battle asks the player to read motion as choreography. Cuphead and Mugman can shoot, dash, jump, parry pink objects, swap weapons, and spend super meter, but survival mostly comes from pattern recognition and clean execution.

Studio MDHR built the game with traditional animation techniques, including hand-drawn character frames, watercolor backgrounds, film-grain effects, and a soundtrack by Kristofer Maddigan rooted in big band, ragtime, and early jazz. That commitment makes Cuphead feel less like a game borrowing an old cartoon style and more like a playable cartoon built from the same visual grammar.

Released in 2017 for Windows and Xbox One before later ports to macOS, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 4, Cuphead became one of the defining independent games of its decade. Its difficulty, craft, and instantly recognizable art direction made it a critical and commercial success, while its influence helped push hand-crafted animation back into the center of game art conversations.
